A short letter from our atelier in Tumbak Bayuh, Pererenan, Bali.
People ask us, gently, why we are so obsessed with bamboo. Why we cut most tops, shorts, and spa robes from it. Why we hesitate to blend it with synthetics, even though it would be cheaper.
Here is the honest answer, in four parts.
1. It breathes the way your skin needs to breathe
Bamboo fibre is hollow at a microscopic level. That structure lets moisture wick off the skin three to four times faster than cotton, and dries roughly twice as quickly. In the tropical heat we work in here in Bali, that is not a marketing claim. It is the difference between a piece you reach for every morning and a piece you leave in the drawer.
2. It is gentle on skin that synthetics punish
Polyester or polyamide, the workhorse of cheap activewear, is plastic, woven thin. It traps heat, holds odour, and sits against the skin in a way that often triggers irritation, especially over long wear. Bamboo is round-fibred and naturally smooth. Studies on hospital textiles have found bamboo fabric to be measurably softer and less abrasive than cotton, let alone synthetics. Your skin notices the first time you wear it.
3. It grows without asking much of the earth
Bamboo regenerates from its own root. The plants we source from earth are harvested with a sickle, not replanted, and the grove keeps producing for decades. It requires no pesticides, very little water, and pulls carbon out of the air four times faster than the equivalent timber forest. Sustainable is a word that has been used until it lost shape, but here, the maths still works.
4. It gets softer the more you live in it
Some materials stiffen with washing. Synthetic activewear pills, fades, and eventually goes to landfill where it will outlive everyone reading this. Bamboo softens. Every wash, every dry on the line in the Canggu sun, the hand of the fabric improves. The piece you buy from us this season is meant to be the same piece you reach for in five years.
That is why we chose bamboo. Not because it markets well. It does, but because we wear our own pieces every day, and we wanted them to feel honest.
